Music of Mexico
Children will explore the sounds and rhythms of Mexico through singing, movement, percussion, listening games, and hands-on instruments. Students will be introduced to music from different regions and communities and experience how music can be connected to celebration, family, storytelling, and everyday life.
Coco & Día de los Muertos
Using music and themes from Coco as a familiar starting point, students will explore Día de los Muertos through age-appropriate songs, stories, movement, and art.
Children will learn about traditions connected to family, remembrance, ofrendas, marigolds, and honoring loved ones, while experiencing Día de los Muertos as a meaningful and living cultural tradition.
Frida Kahlo & Mexican Artists
Students will meet artists such as Frida Kahlo and discover how artists use color, nature, clothing, symbols, and imagination to express who they are and tell stories about their lives.
Children will create their own artwork inspired by the artists and traditions they encounter throughout the semester.
Mexican American & Chicanx Culture
Students will also be introduced to Mexican American and Chicanx music, art, movement, and storytelling.
Through playful, developmentally appropriate activities, children will discover how communities create new artistic traditions while maintaining connections to family, heritage, culture, and place.
Guest Artist Visits
One of the highlights of the semester will be visits from guest artists representing different artistic traditions from Mexico and Mexican American communities.
Students may experience live music, dance, visual art, storytelling, instruments, folk arts, and other creative practices. These visits help children understand that the traditions they are studying are living art forms practiced and shared by real people and communities today.
Each class is designed to be joyful, interactive, and developmentally appropriate while honoring the cultural integrity of the traditions being explored.
